The cycle can perform everything but the speed boost. The vehicle also switches into a motorcycle after it takes more than 50% damage, in both the water and on land. Every switch happens instantly and in realtime, and it's a cool switch every time I see it.

Using the now quite average spinning-in-slow-motion Matrix camera technique, you car makes a jump off a ramp, and its wheels fold in and are replaced by a water-proof sheaths, the hood retracts, creating pontoons of the front headlight sections, and a blue-flamed turbine pops up above the trunk to power the vehicle. The Interceptor can speed along on hard surfaces, but also is an avid speedboat, and the cut-scenes that initially show this switch revels in the switch. Perhaps the coolest feature that's returned is the vehicle transformation, as well as a second set of vehicle metamorphoses that just pump the cool factor to 11.

The game also features other new stuff, such as EMP blasts to stop bombs, tagging devices for tracking suspect vehicles, flame throwers, and a few more. Now, players receive upgrades to their weapons, such as greater capacity for weapons, and more powerful weapons, such as heat-seeking cluster missiles, instead of solo ones. It's got an infinite amount of machine gun ammo for ground vehicles, heat-seeking missiles for airborne ones, oil slicks, smoke screens, and a few extra items.

The Interceptor can do everything that crusty old jalopy from yesteryear could do, plus a little bit more. One could truly say that "this isn't your Dad's Oldsmobile," and have it hold true for SpyHunter. Given a totally remade vehicle, the G-6155 Interceptor, a sleek yet muscled-up sports car that looks like a cross between a Porsche Boxster Roadster and a Lotus Esprit, you basically must save the world. It takes players on a simple spy journey: A small elite group of evil businessmen (calling themselves Nostra) want to control the world for the better of mankind, of course, by shutting off energy across the world via a set of satellites and some powerful EMP bursts. Stylized for the home, SpyHunter now has a little bit of a story. That's what SpyHunter is really all about, and that's what this new version delivers. When Paradigm and Midway sorted our their priorities during the design process, they appeared to have kept focused on that great balance between driving incredibly fast and blowing up tons of stuff with cool weapons. Gameplay It doesn't take a rocket scientist to describe why this game is so fun. And while some things have changed - such as camera angles, controls, and goals - Spy Hunter is still basically the same game, modernized, prettied up, and stylized. The balance of action versus racing is equally balanced, and the vehicles feel powerful and fast. SpyHunter doesn't stun you with the best graphics you've ever seen, but it looks good just the same. Think of it as a combination of the original SpyHunter and Beetle Adventure Racing.

The game is relatively deep, but more importantly, the enemy doesn't just get super cheap near the end, and the game neither appears rushed nor is it overly simplified. SpyHunter for PlayStation 2 is one of Midway's best arcade games in years because it provides an incredible level of racing thrills with a respectable quantity of blasting and action, but more to the point, it's not been messed up. SpyHunter, undeniably and perhaps sadly, was a big part of my childhood, and it's helped shape my idea of what a great arcade game should be. The fast-action racing-shooter relieved me from my English studies when I needed it, stole time from my girlfriend (which was a good thing sometimes), and was the receiver of some cruel, harsh words when I performed badly at it. Pac-Man (the table-top version) and Ikari Warriors would be Midway's SpyHunter. If I could pick three of my three favorite coin-op games from the mid to late '80s, along with Ms.
